AR and Activism at Artivive AR Summit
In September 2022, Safiya and Maria from Ricebox were invited to be keynote speakers at the Artivive AR Summit to speak about Augmented Reality (AR), activism, storytelling and design.
We talked about our experiments with using AR for educational content and tackling the period stigma and taboo on social media and through interactive design, and our collaborations with university students to create the AR aspect of the book ‘Find Me Among Them’ in collaboration with Our Sisterhood. We also mentioned our knowledge exchange impact on teaching AR to students in design, specifically how one of the students in 3rd year at Sheffield Hallam University named Azizah Raghib, used AR alongside other forms of emerging tech such as facial recognition and traditional forms of design such as printmaking to highlight the negative bias in the portrayal of muslims in the UK media as part of her final project ‘More Than Words’.
